Shabir wins Islamia College cycle race



Srinagar, May 20: Shabir Ahmad Akhoon emerged winner of annual cycle race of Islamia College, held from Nehru Park to Naseem Bagh via Fore Shore road on Wednesday. The event was flagged off by the principal Islamia College, Dr Saleem Khan, and 107 cyclists participated in it. From the start Shabir took lead and maintained that through out. His closest rival Umer Nabi tried hard to catch him (Shabir) but could not match his speed. Shabir maintained the constant speed of 40-kilometers per hour and at finish line he clocked above 50-kilometers. He finished first with a timing of 22:32:39 with comfortable lead of one-kilometer against second finisher Umer Nabi. He finished with the timing of 24:30:92. Mudasir finished third with the timing of 26:30:95. Nisar Ahmad and Zahid Ahmad finished fourth and fifth respectively. Altaf Samad, Basim Dar, Aamir Feroze, Shanawaz Hussain and Sheikh Faheem finished sixth, seventh, eight, ninth and tenth respectively. Expressing happiness over the victory Shabir said, “I’m delighted to regain the championship. Last year I finished second and I desperately wanted to win this time and leave the college on winning note.” Shabir is the only cyclist of the state who has won medal at national level and he has been dominating the cycling arena from last five years. He has won 100-kilometer Tour-de-Kashmir cycling event twice and has also won numerous other cycling events.
